The Eyes Have It

These meteors are all in my eye, that
zigzag of lightning too, these
manifestations merely my brain
confused by conflicting stimuli,
one eye now looking at things
slant, seeing detailed maps that
scroll endlessly, purple clouds that
eventually obscure the sun.

Soon the abrasion of science on the
skin of life will begin: kind
overworked people struggling to
rid me of maps and clouds,
meteors, lightning, trying to
vouchsafe my vision, but
please God, after all their efforts,
let it still be slant.

Bridges and Tunnels

Sometimes we build bridges
sometimes we dig tunnels
sometimes we do both for
different folk
ending up astride a
startlingly sharp fence
