Shipwright

The big unfinished ships squat on the beach,

bodies on their backs, bare ribs

bemoaning lost faith, so I

hurry past to something simpler,

clinker-built, water-tight, well-

suited to shallow ponds or

chalk-streams, easy to work with

adze and chisel, stopping my ears to the

ghost groans of the oak that

might have taken me out to sea.

Pebbles

The rain lacquers the pebbles

picked up on holiday but now

dull and tawdry

dotted about the garden, their

chaotic tumble from

continent to crumbs

interrupted by my

acquisitive eye.

Grey

Grey is much-maligned,

misunderstood, its

pallid rainbow arcing from

pearlescent white to

barely black, often layered

like a Gothic wedding dress,

chiffon over crepe, its

damp hem dripping.

Mare Nostrum

Boats, boats, boats bedeck this sea:

bailing, bailing, failing;

bodies bobbing, black on blue;

babies drifting from mothers

floating like our policies,

tits up.
