Shy Exhibitionists

Poetry can be long-ships in deep water

full of foul-mouthed horny sailors

desperate to take continents

village by village, pillaging

words, leaving readers raped and

pregnant with strange thoughts.

Poetry can be paper boats floated by

shy exhibitionists, hulls packed with

love, lust, loss, lost as

paper perishes and

blood and ink become

commingled with dark sea.

How true of poetry! Favorite line: “lost as paper perishes’ sounds great. I did however want to change the last line to simply ‘commingled with the sea’ and scratch the word ‘dark’, as the sea is already mysterious in itself without the added description. Nice work!

Thank you:) It’s funny, I had the first stanza pretty much written but didn’t know where it was going, and I was writing an email to a poet friend last night when I wrote that she was a shy exhibitionist as a joke, but then saw how the rest of the poem would work 😉 I hesitated about that last line. It’s meant as a reference to Homer, “the wine-dark sea”, but I will look at it again x
