The old laurel tree is like a

dark tenement full of

rackety lodgers who come for a

season then flit by daylight,

perpetually noisy, crawling with vermin,

forever squabbling, prone to

robberies during which

children are murdered,

alarms going off all day and

into the dusk, but no

police called and always

surprisingly sweet singing at the

dawn of another day.

I find myself wondering which bird is full of vermin, and murders the children of other birds! 🙂 I’ve probably got the wrong end of the stick entirely!

Birds have to clean themselves of vermin (insects) all the time, and I have watched just a day or so ago the organised attack by three magpies on the nests of blackbirds. Last year I watched them feasting on the eggs of starlings in the same tree. I wrote a poem about it 🙂

I did wonder if it was magpies, but I had only heard that they like to steal shiny objects like small jewelry. Thanks for the lesson! 🙂

Mmmm…. I do like the idea of vermin dwelling there –
    Nice poem!
