“Remember, remember….”

(For G.F.)

Each November night fizzles with

fractions of sound, lonely reports,

puny lights in the sky,

pathetic each separation of

bang and buck, but if we all

pooled our resources, got our

gunpowder gathered into

one mighty arsenal, set

light to it together—what

wonders we would winnow from our

hard-earned cash!

Let me propose a date: November 5th

it’s easy to remember, the

Fifth of November—and let’s call it

something catchy like

Bonfire Night in memory of the

vanities we would burn by having

one night of splendour instead of a

week of selfish sputterings

November 5th was my grandmother’s birthday. She would have loved the idea of a big celebration on her day.
